Sensory painting

Over this course you will learn how to feel colours and lines. We will take time to focus on listening, seeing and feeling as we paint! The course includes photos, text, tasks and a handful of short videos, however it does not include the presence of the instructor. The course requires active painting from the participant, as only viewing the course material will not allow for effective learning. For the course, you can use your own paints, although the paints featured on the videos and examples shown by the teacher are types of acrylic paints. All of the course content has been created by the visual artist Päivi Kukkasniemi.

The course contains different types of tasks that will help you enjoy the moment, and bring your senses out through drawing lines and using different colours. It is often that new aspiring artists paint in a highly technical and intellectual manner, as school has often valued skill over expression. However, the goal of this course is to dedicate a different type of podium for that very expression and sensitivity that often gets left out.

As mentioned, the course can be completed using the already existing materials that you may own, from acrylic paints, to oil colours. Some of the instructions have been created to be used with acrylic colours, however if needed, they can be adjusted to be used with other paints. In addition, you will need pens or charcoal (some of the examples have been created using marker ink and charcoal), a number of sketching paper in varying sizes, and canvases that suit your chosen painting style. The course may inspire you to try out new materials as well.

The course will progress through the completion of tasks, and it doesn't include the presence of the teacher nor the evaluation of finished practices. However a part of the purpose of this course is pushing you to learn to listen to yourself, and to trust that your inner voice is right against any external opinions. The course suits anyone interested in its content, beginners as well as for those who have spent longer times working with paints.
